Waylon Roberts Invited to Brazil For FEI World Children’s Jumper Final
Roberts, 14, of Port Perry, ON, started his 2002 jumper season off brilliantly by winning first and third place in the two phases of Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) International Children’s Jumper competition at the Caledon Summer Festival in Palgrave, ON, aboard Illusion, a 14.3 hh Irish-bred mare owned by Sandra Andresen.
As a result of his excellent placings in Palgrave, Roberts was the top ranked Canadian rider on the FEI Children’s standings. On November 19, he received notice from the FEI that he had been invited to compete at the Finals.
“I am extremely excited to represent Canada at the Finals,” remarked Roberts. “This will be the largest competition I have ever done, and it is quite an honour to be invited.”
A total of 16 riders from Brazil and 16 foreign riders will compete, and the Final is open to children from the age of 12 until the end of the year they reach 14.
In preparation for the Finals, Roberts has been riding as many different horses as possible. Riders will draw the horse they will compete on December 3 and each training session only allows six obstacles to be jumped, excluding cross-rails.
Riders will participate in two qualifying rounds with the top 16 moving on to the final round on December 8th. A farewell competition, also on the 8th, is open for those riders who did not qualify for the Final.
