Foal Mortality Insurance Cancelled for 2003

Source :  Equine Canada

Equine Canada's Breeds & Industry Division has regretfully cancelled the Foal Mortality Insurance that it planned to offer in 2003.

There was vast interest in this unique insurance package, offered by no other organization in Canada, but Equine Canada did not generate enough sales by Dec. 20, 2002, nor receive enough guarantees of sales from the Canadian breed associations affiliated with Equine Canada, to cover the costs of the premium to the underwriter. Unlike in 2002, Equine Canada could not subsidize the insurance package in 2003.

"The Breeds & Industry Division of Equine Canada is committed to providing unique benefits for our member organizations," said Chris Gould, Chair of the Breeds & Industry Division of Equine Canada. "We have postponed the Foal Mortality Insurance until 2004 when we can offer an enhanced package that will meet the insurance needs of the entire membership, the breeders and non-breeders alike."

For the single premium of $30 per member, Equine Canada's Foal Mortality Insurance, through insurance brokerage B.F. Lorenzetti & Associates (Ontario) Inc., insured up to 30 foals from the time they stood and nursed to seven days of age. Benefits payable under the plan were to be calculated at one and a half times the stud fee to a maximum indemnity of $4,000 per foal, and $4,000 per member (per year).

Equine Canada wishes to thank its member organizations for spreading the word about the Foal Mortality Insurance and commends the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society and the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association for committing to a "group buy-in", which would have guaranteed the sale of insurance to a significant percentage of their membership.
