Switzerland's Markus Fuchs in The Lead

Showjumping competition is underway today with the first class of the individual and team qualifiers. Leading the pack right now is Switzerland's Markus Fuchs aboard Tinka's Boy. Canada's highest placing rider is Mac Cone on Cocu (22nd).

Colourful flowers and Spanish themes filled the Chapin stadium in the form of show jumps for the first round of the Jumping World Championships. Course designer Avelino Rodriguez Miravalles from Spain designed a course of thirteen obstacles including a double and a treble combination and option jumps at three of the fences. The heights were set from 1.40m at jump number one 1.54m at the option fence number 12b. Spread fences were up to 1.90m in width.

The Table C competition did not cause too much trouble to the ninety seven horses taking part, only two horses were eliminated and one retired, all three having problems with the treble combination at number nine. Fifteen horses jumped clear rounds and thirty five had just one rail down.

Swiss rider Marcus FUCHS riding Tinka's Boy jumped the fastest clean round of the day to finish in the lead and on the way to a spot in the final four for the individual Gold medal. Second was the French rider Eric Levallois riding Diamant de Semilly Ecolit who is just .16 of a penalty behind and third Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum riding Gladdys S finishing with just .50 of a penalty.

“I was very happy with my horse." said Fuchs, "He coped well with an excellent course with no mistakes. The course was well designed with many colours and the options at various fences was an excellent idea in a speed class. I decided to take the right-hand option at fence ten as it suited my horse better.”

Fuchs was the only rider to take this route.
"I never walked the straight way. I had decided that if my horse was going well, I’d risk the quicker option." explained Fuchs, "I think at a normal competition, about 30 per cent of the riders would have done the same but at a World Championship, people are playing safe."


Germany's Ludger Beerbaum was very happy with the course.
"The course builder has done a very good job. Sometimes at a Championship they can be a little crazy with the first course but this was not the case. My horse jumped well which can be unusual for her on the first day. The crowds are set back from the arena which helped me to keep her settled."


The top 25 combinations will continue to Saturday's competition. Sunday will see the top 4 compete for World Champion honours.
